Our Story
As a social worker, The Look of Love’s founder, Niya Parks, saw firsthand the hardships children faced on a daily basis. It was heartbreaking to see the number of ethnically diverse children with hair painfully matted to their head because caregivers for these children didn’t have the resources or education to help them.
Her experience in social work moved her to create The Look of Love to provide outreach, education, and services to help foster children who are often overlooked, are victims of bullying, or have low self-esteem. By providing proper hair care to help children maintain their appearance, it is our hope that we can make one small difference for children living in the foster care system.
Our Services
The Look of Love serves children, youth, and caregivers through training seminars, direct hair services, and advocacy efforts. We also sponsor free services for homeless youth, victims of bullying, Veterans, multiracial families, and more throughout our nation.
Partnerships in the community — including with foster care groups, hair salons, and small businesses and advocacy organizations — are vital to the work of The Look of Love, and we have hit the ground running to foster those relationships and build out a network of professionals, foster parents, and volunteers to support our cause.
Our Mission
There is a significant lack of oversight in the social services system to address the challenges that foster parents and caregivers face to care for hair that may be ethnically different from their own, as well as the negative psychological impacts that children face when their hair is not well-maintained.
The mission of The Look of Love is to empower foster youth through hair care education and services and provide support and hair care for children whose hair needs are often unmanaged due to a lack of understanding.
The Look of Love is recognized as tax-exempt under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
All services are contingent on funding. The Look of Love supports a national effort.
